There is usually a point where everything is ready.
The document has been checked. Renamed. Checked again.
The application portal is open in one tab, part of the student application system. The file is sitting on the desktop in another.
Something like “final_transcript_updated.pdf”.
At this stage people move a bit more slowly.
Not because the task is difficult. It just feels like the last step.
Upload the file. Click submit. That’s it.
The page loads normally.
The upload button is there.
The instructions haven’t changed.
Everything looks the same as before.
So the file is selected.
The progress bar appears.
It starts moving.
Usually quickly at first.
Then slower.
97%.
98%.
And then, just before it finishes, the screen changes.
No warning.
No message.
Just a login page.
Email.
Password.
The session has expired.
For a second it feels like a small interruption.
So the login details are entered again.
The portal reloads.
The application opens.
Back to the upload section.
But the file is no longer there.
Nothing has been saved.
The process has reset without saying it has reset.
So it starts again.
Select file.
Wait.
Watch the progress bar more closely this time.
Sometimes it works on the second attempt.
Sometimes it doesn’t.
In those cases people start trying small things.
They rename the file.
Shorten the name.
Remove spaces.
Try a different browser.
Refresh the page before uploading.
Log out and back in again first, just in case.
None of these steps are in the instructions.
But they appear anyway.
Occasionally the portal behaves differently.
The upload completes.
The file appears.
The status updates.
And everything moves forward again.
But not always immediately.
Sometimes there is a delay.
A few seconds where nothing changes.
Long enough to hesitate.
So people stay on that page a bit longer than they need to.
Watching the screen.
Waiting for something to confirm it actually went through.
Because once it is visible in the portal, it feels more real.
Even if it has changed before.
